Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that causes red, dry, breaking skin sometimes accompanied by pain or itching and in an extreme stage bleeding. Often times, when we think our feet are dry and cracking, Athlete’s foot is responsible.
These tips can help you avoid athlete’s foot or ease the symptoms if infection occurs:
Frequently wearing damp socks or tightfitting shoes, walking barefoot in public areas where the infection can spread, such as locker rooms, swimming pools, communal baths and showers, sharing mats, rugs, bed linens, clothes or shoes with someone who has a fungal infection and wearing tight or damp socks can cause this infection.
- Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes.
- Go barefoot to let your feet air out as much as possible when you’re home.
- Dry between your toes after a bath or shower.
- Change your socks regularly and if have sweaty feet, it is best to change your socks twice daily.
- Wear light, well-ventilated shoes, avoid shoes made of synthetic material, such as vinyl or rubber.
- Alternate your foot wears, don’t wear the same pair every day so that you give your shoes time to dry after each use.
- Protect your feet in public places; wear waterproof sandals or shoes around public pools, showers and locker rooms.
- Treat your feet-use powder; preferably antifungal on your feet daily.
- Don’t share shoes, sharing risks spreading the fungal infection.
Picking a footwear can be really tiresome but it is best for an infected person to wear just scandals but if for unavoidable reasons, you have to wear a shoe it is best to wear synthetic socks that will wick away moisture or wear shoes made of a porous material.
